We have a piano now. Seems a bit full circle. You may or may not know that I majored in music education in college. I played piano as my main instrument, though I also play flute. In high school my parents recognized my desire to make music a big part of my life, and we got a Steinway grand piano. I got to pick it out. Talk about amazing. So if you told me back then that someday I’d be excited to have an electric, plug-in piano, I would have scoffed and said, “Never!” Ah, how things change.
Once we got the piano, this whole room seemed to come together in terms of furniture arrangement. Our poster of Louis seems so much more appropriate now with something musical underneath him. Before he was just hangin’ out, smokin’ a cig. Now he has some company.
My parents gave this piece of art to me years ago- I think they got it in New Orleans. We finally got it framed and it now hangs next to Louis. I love it because it combines my two instruments, flute and piano, into one piece. Rad.
Why the electric? We have kids. Who sleep. The only time I can possibly play for my own enjoyment is when they are asleep. With an electric piano I can plug in the headphones and play to my heart’s content.
I am also loving our lamp. I recovered it after being inspired by this pin. As much as I would love to buy one as I saw it, I couldn’t justify it when I had all the materials to make one myself. Music paper, hot glue annnnnd…. done!
Now if I can just get my confidence and my super-speedy fingers back….

Life is crazy. Craft it well. Thanks for stopping by Crafting Crazy! I'm stumbling into a new sort of life after leaving a 12-year teaching career. More of a practical crafter, I'm trying to temper the perfection a bit. If I mess up, I’ll be sure to share- then we can laugh together. Here you'll find anything I like that makes my life better or fun. Crafts, of course, but also posts about food, home decor, exercise... whatever I'm dabbling in at the moment. I'm so glad you're here- thanks for stopping by!

i am TOTALLY with you on going the digital route when it comes to pianos! my mom got an old used (but good!) steinway grand when i was in high school (she had always wanted one and took advantage of the fact that i was doing all these piano competitions and needing to practice on a grand as her excuse to get one). you’re so lucky you got to choose one yourself and could afford a new one though – wow! so my friend just this week asked me if she should get a real piano for her kiddos or go digital. in the past i would have said real piano for sure (in the days of the dinky casio keyboards that didn’t even have 88 keys). but i’ve been a HUGE fan of my digital piano ever since i got it in 2000 and i couldn’t even tell my friend any cons to having a digital piano as long as it has the same sound and feel as a grand piano (must have weighted keys that have the action of a grand piano’s keys though). i personally would not settle for buying anything less than what i would enjoy playing not only big concert pieces on, but the most elementary songs too. you already mentioned the fact that with a digital piano one can use headphones or control the volume. she already liked that since she could imagine one kid practicing with headphones while the other does homework. but i know her hubby is a music geek and with the MIDI capabilities that come with most digital pianos these days, there are SO many countless options for recording music that i personally use… after telling her about some of those options i think i convinced her that she could NOT pass up a good digital piano. also, one need not tune a digital piano, digital pianos are often more portable (i would never have gotten a real piano up all the steps in our little condo), … gosh, i really can’t think of any down sides of having a good digital piano! i still enjoy playing mom’s steinway or any other grand whenever i get the chance. but i agree with you that times sure have changed when it comes to the value and quality of digital pianos these days! your kids will have so much fun hearing mom play. i’m sure you will inspire them to play too! =) oh and p.s. – love the lamp! =)
